North Carolina borders South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia. Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and Charlotte is the largest city.

In the eastern section, sandy islands form a barricade between the Atlantic Ocean and the inland waterways called the Outer Banks. The Outer Banks form the Albemarle Sound and the Pamlico Sound and these are the two largest landlocked sounds in the United States.

The highest mountain in the Eastern United States is Mount Mitchell.

North Carolina has both a humid subtropical climate and a subtropical highland climate.

Approximately 33 well know films and TV shows were filmed in North Carolina. Some of those are: The secret Life of Bees, The Color Purple, Dawson's Creek, Dirty Dancing, The Fugitive, Hannibal, The Green Mile, and The Last of the Mohicans. North Carolina is also home to some of the Southeast's largest film festivals.

North Carolina is known for motorsports. 80% of the NASCAR racing teams are located here. The Zmax Dragway is a the only drag strip to hold 4-wide drag racing events in the U.S. The NASCAR Hall of Fame is located in Charlotte.

The well known Duke University is located in North Carolina.
