Roswell is the county seat of Chaves County, located in the southeastern part of New Mexico, with about 45,000 residents. The economy is based on farming, cattle ranching, manufacturing, distribution, and petroleum production.

Roswell is surrounded by open grasslands, a variety of parks, tree-lined streets and green lawns. It lies over an enormous underground aquifer. Roswell has two large, modernly equipped hospitals: Eastern New Mexico Medical Center and Roswell Regional Hospital, plus smaller specialty hospitals. Roswell also has an airport.

Did You Know? A flying object, alleged to be an alien spacecraft, crashed on a ranch near Roswell on or about July 8, 1947, supposedly leaving dead aliens. It has become the most famous UFO incident in U.S. history.
