In 1765, the french fur trade village was given it's name from the French King, Louis the IX. In 1803, St. Louis became a national landmark as the place where Lewis and Clack began their Louisiana Purchase Expedition. In 1876, the once small village of predominantly french, german and irish immigrants had it's boundaries rezoned to it's current size. By the late 1900's, St. Louis was the fourth largest city in America, and in 1904, the city hosted the Olympic games.
