Founded in 1764, St. Louis is located in Missouri. The 2008 metropolitan population is about 2.8 million, the largest metropolitan area in Missouri. The city is situated on bluffs 100 to 200 feet above the west bank of the Mississippi River. Much of the land is gently rolling with low hills and shallow valleys.

Residential housing ranges from historic mansions and estate homes to newer modern homes, starter homes, and high-rise apartments. The cost of living index in St. Louis is lower than the national average.
St. Louis is a culturally rich urban area with green space but also offers relaxing recreation on the Mississippi River, such as riverboat cruises, and hiking trails, playgrounds, water, and open space in its 105 parks, including the enormous Forest Park, Tower Grove Park, Layfayette Park, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, and the Laumeier Sculpture Park.
