Hagerstown real estate information:
Hagerstown is the county seat and largest city of Washington County, Maryland. It is the state's sixth largest city. It is situated in Cumberland Valley (locally called Hagerstown Valley), near the Potomac River and close to Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia. Hagerstown is about 70 miles northwest of Washington, D.C.
The city has a diverse economy, with industries in manufacturing and transportation in railroads and highways. Agriculture is strong in the surrounding area. Tourists come to Hagerstown and the surrounding area mainly to see Civil War attractions, such as Antietam National Battlefield and nearby South Mountain State Battlefield. Gettysburg, Monocacy and Harpers Ferry battlefields are all within a half hour drive from Hagerstown. The city has many sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
City amenities include Hagerstown City Park, home to the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Mansion House Art Gallery and the Hager House and Museum; Fairgrounds Park, which has the Ice & Sports Complex; Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum, displaying the city's early railroad history; Downtown's Discovery Station, a hands-on science museum; the Maryland Theatre; Washington County Playhouse; and the Academy Theatre Banquet & Conference Center. The city is popular with mountain bikers, fishermen, canoeists and hunters because of the abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities in the area. The Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal Towpath are nearby.
Did You Know? One of the most famous symbols of Hagerstown is the weathervane known as "Little Heiskell", named for a German tinsmith Benjamin Heiskell, who created it in 1769 in the form of a Hessian soldier. It was atop the Market House and then moved to City Hall.
