Relocating to Bridgeport

Positioned against a splendid harbor on the Long Island Sound, Bridgeport is in a very profitable geographic location reinforced the early settlers shift from agrarian to mercantile and manufacturing pursuits. Bridgeport expanded from a whaling center into an industrial center after the opening of the railroad in 1840. By the 19th century, Bridgeport's industries were producing many products including brass and cast-iron fittings, carriages, saddlery, sewing machines, tools, and ammunition. Harvey Hubbell patented the first electric light socket with a pull chain in Bridgeport, CT in 1896. A design which is still in use today. By the 1930s the community had almost 500 manufacturing firms. Today Bridgeport is still a manufacturing center, producing electrical and transportation equipment, plastics, and machine tools.
