San Luis Obispo is a city on the central coast of California, midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County. Founded in 1772, it is one of California's oldest communities. The population is just under 45,000.

Because of its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia Mountains, residents enjoy a wide selection of outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, diving, sailing and kite boarding. The city is very bicycle friendly. In 2007, the city was named a Bicycle Friendly Community at the Silver level by the League of American Bicyclists.

The heart of Downtown is Mission Plaza, a creek side plaza with quaint shops, interesting boutiques and eateries. Visitors can visit three museums: Arts Center, Historical Museum, and Children's Museum, enjoy a relaxing meal on outdoor patios overlooking the creek, listen to outdoor concerts, view public art, have a picnic, or simply take a leisurely walk along the creek.

Did You Know? San Luis Obispo was the location of the country's first motel, the Milestone Mo-Tel. In 1990, San Luis Obispo became the first municipality in the world to ban smoking in all public buildings, including restaurants and bars.
