Bakersfield is located in Kern County, California, in the southern central San Joaquin Valley, halfway between Los Angeles and Fresno. Bakersfield is the state's third largest inland city, after Fresno and Sacramento, with a population over 330,000.
Bakersfield's proximity to the Sequoia National Forest offers residents many outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting in the Kern River. In April 2009, Forbes Magazine rated Kern River one of the Top 10 whitewater rivers in the country. Fort Tejon State Historic Park, established in 1854, hosts monthly Civil War battle re-enactments.
