Tempe is located in central Maricopa County, Arizona, and is a major part of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. Arizona's sixth largest city is bordered by Scottsdale to the north, Mesa to the east, Chandler to the south and Phoenix to the west. Tempe's centralized location makes it attractive to both businesses and residents, who have easy access to all areas of the Valley of the Sun, as well as major cities in the Southwest.
Tempe has many parks, athletic fields, dog parks, lighted tennis courts, public swimming pools, golf courses and a two-mile urban park complex. Areas of interest include the Mill Avenue District, ASU Art Museum, ASU Gammage, Sun Devil Stadium, Desert Botanical Garden, Arizona Mills mall, Tempe Town Lake, Tempe Beach Park, Papago Park, Splash Playground, Town Lake Marina and Giuliano Park. The city has 165 miles of scenic bikeways, including designated on-street bike lanes. The League of American Bicyclists honored Tempe with a Silver-Level Bicycle-Friendly Community Award.
Tempe is served by several school districts, the main ones being the Tempe Elementary School District and the Tempe Union High School District. Tempe is home to the largest campus of Arizona State University, as well as Maricopa County Community College.
