Laguna Niguel, incorporated in 1989, is a 14.72 square mile planned city, located in southern Orange County in a hilly area near the southern end of the San Joaquin Hills. Located halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, it is bordered by Laguna Beach, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills, and Aliso Viejo.
The Laguna Niguel Corporation, begun by Cabot, Cabot, and Forbes from Boston in 1959, made the area one of the first master planned communities in California. The first communities were known as Monarch Bay and the Monarch Bay Terrace, constructed between 1960 and 1962. Laguna Niguel is now home to many upscale neighborhoods, which include Bear Brand Ranch, Ocean Ranch, Coronado Pointe, South Peak, Crest de Ville, Niguel Coast, Palmilla, and Monarch Point. Many offer beautiful views of the Aliso Canyon and Pacific Ocean. Other desirable neighborhoods include Rancho Niguel, Marina Hills, Niguel West, Niguel Summit, Beacon Hill, El Niguel Heights, Kite Hill, and San Joaquin Hills.
The city is served by the Capistrano Unified School District. The high schools for Laguna Niguel students are located in Dana Point and Aliso Viejo. Nearby colleges and universities include Saddleback College, Chapman University, Soka University of America, University of California- Irvine, and California State University- Fullerton.
