Scottsdale is a popular tourist destination with great shopping, golfing, and cultural amenities that caused The New York Times to call downtown Scottsdale "a desert version of Miami's South Beach" with "plenty of late night partying and a buzzing hotel scene". The climate is arid, with mild winters and hot, dry summers.
Scottsdale is bordered by Phoenix and Paradise Valley to the west, Carefree to the north, Tempe to the south, and Fountain Hills and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to the east.
The city's main areas are South Scottsdale with older homes; Old Town Scottsdale (Downtown), especially the waterfront with luxury hi-rise condos; Central Scottsdale (also known as the "Shea Corridor"), and North Scottsdale.
In 1993, Scottsdale, AZ was named the "Most Livable City" in the country by the United States Conference of Mayors. It is regularly ranked one of the top golf and resort locations in the world. The tourist economy is bolstered by PGA golf tournaments and superb courses, making it a golfers' haven. The Tournament Players Club is perhaps the best-attended event on the PGA Tour. In 2006, the Robb Report called Scottsdale "America's Best Place to Live for Golf".
Scottsdale neighborhoods include Pinnacle Peak Heights, Buenavante, Silverton, Scottsdale Ranch, Mission Monterey, Gainey Ranch, McCormick Ranch, El Paseo, Anthem, McDowell Mountain Ranch, DC Ranch, Kierland, Shea, and Sonoran Hills. Troon North is a golf-oriented community nestled up to the McDowell Mountains.
Arizona State University, the nation's largest public research university, with over 67,000 students, has a campus in Scottsdale.
