Fairfax, with just over 22,000 residents, manages to combine a small town charm with an energetic urban center. The city offers all the big city amenities and housing choices, which range from newer condominium apartments, single family housing developments and townhouses to grand, stately renovated houses in the city's Historic District, also on the National Register of Historic Places. Many people who call Fairfax home commute to work in Washington D.C.

The city is served by the Fairfax County Public Schools system. Centers for higher education serving the area include George Mason University, the second largest university in Virginia, and Northern Virginia Community College, the second largest multi-campus community college in the country, and the largest in Virginia, has its Annandale Campus just east of Fairfax. These expand the total city population during business and school hours to about 100,000.
