Atherton is a small extremely wealthy city in San Mateo County, incorporated in 1923. It is located on the peninsula between the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, not far from the San Francisco Bay. Atherton is two miles from Redwood City and 18 miles from San Jose. It is surrounded by Menlo Park, Redwood City, Woodside, and unincorporated areas of San Mateo County. The 2008 estimated population is 7,400.
Local community organizations include the Atherton Heritage Association, the Atherton Arts Committee, the Atherton Tree Committee, the Friends of the Atherton Community Library, the Holbrook-Palmer Park Foundation, the Atherton Dames, and the Atherton Civic Interest League. Menlo College, Silicon Valley's Business School, is located in Atherton.
